On an “international tour” since his birth in Japan, Derek has experienced life and music in global proportions living around the world until his family finally settled in Maryland. Catching the “jazz bug” at twenty, Derek abandoned the local DC punk rock movement of the ‘80’s and moved to LA where he received a Bachelors Degree in Music from California State University Northridge (C.S.U.N.). He furthered his studies at the Dick Grove School of Music studying piano and jazz composition. He also attended the Musicians Institute in Hollywood California and played in the big band at San Fernando Valley College. He has studied privately with: Ron Elliston, Dick Grove, Otmaro Ruiz, Larry Willis, Richard Adams among others. Learning and living music from inside the LA jazz scene, Derek experimented and has developed an authentic musical voice. He has performed with such notable artists as Carly Simon, and Cher and Joao Mendonsa. In 1992, Derek moved back to DC and evolved his musicianship to work directly with songwriters and composers as a composer/producer/recording engineer creating Art of Music Studios in Alexandria VA and soon Art of Music MX in San Felipe Mexico.
